I was having a look at the entries (http://www.azab.co.uk/Entries.htm) for the Azab 2007. There are two 32s and two 35s.

Anyone up for it?;)

Hi Andy,

I may do the 500 mile qualifier this year. The actual race is to far away at the moment for me to give it a solid commitment, although the thought of having a crack at the nic32s and the Contessa's that have entered is mouth watering.

How do you reckon we'd get on against a Contessa 32? They are slippery, aren't they.

David, Slippery but wet I understand. This would be a real horse race. I'm fascinated ! Go for it ! Is this event handicapped?... a measurement rule? If so my money is on the Nic.
Cheers, Bill.

I seem to remember that when we used to do the Round The Island Race (http://www.roundtheisland.org.uk/web/code/php/main.php?section=home), we used to rate exactly the same as the Contessa 32 (we might have actually had to give them some time) and we couldn't get near them. That was with an estimated handicap though.

Now, to be fare, we aren't the most technical when it comes to sail trim etc, but the 32s are cruiser/racers from the off.

No way I want to admit defeat though....

Around the cans, the Contessa will win being lighter and more manoeverable than the Nic. In light airs the Nic will be beaten, but on a long ocean race with 20 knots plus wind I reckon the nic will win, this is only a guess though.

When we used to race, I can remember my Dad wishing for more wind and saying things like "That's what we want! That'll stop 'em". He used to refer disparagingly to boats such as GK29s (which always seemed to be in our class) as 'decked-in dingies'!.

The thought was that they couldn't sit on the rail all day and that a bit of a chop would sort the men from the boys.

But, guess what, it didn't and they just went faster!!!!

I have been trying to get on to the forum for ages!! I have had to log in as a new person - guys have you seen the AZAB2007 site lately...
You have missed the boat, if you wanted to enter, the max is 70 boats.
Look who is entered though.

I haven't even seen my boat yet! My crew can't qualify with me because he's off to Oz for three months and I'm trying to get a dispensation for him. ( the rules say you have to do your qualifier with your named crew).
Guess what my qualifier is - 3700nms across the pond to bring her home in June. (You only need 500nms to qualify!!)

by the way who is looking after member registration for the member forum its been driving me mad not being able to get on. Cheers Ian (was IanCrew).

Yes, everyone did need to re-register to use this "New Improved" forum. Sorry for any confusion.

Anyone know how I get a rating - the race rules say I must have a certificate stating "....a minimum SSSN of 34 or STIX of minimum 32 and AVA minimum of 130 - 0.002 x m where m is the minimum sailing weight in kg."

Help?? cheers
Ian

Would the RORC Rating Office (http://www.rorcrating.com/) be any use?

I checked the azab site a couple of weeks ago and there were 30 odd places unfilled. On previous races I seem to recall that 50 boats is the average fleet, maybe some will drop out, it's over a year to start date. If not it Looks like the 2009 OSTAR for me.Goodluck to you Ian.Ask Tony about the rating system he is a keen racer.

Hi David
I was in contact with Anne Thomas who organises the AZAB about this time last year. I asked her to let me know when the list got near 60. She contacted me when it did and two weekends ago it went over the 70 mark in a day! You are right, there are a few drop outs. So you never know - have a word with Anne if you fancy it - she'll put you on the reserves bench I'm sure.
Her number is 01326 318184.

I did the last Azab, in a Storm 33. It is the most exciting thing I have done for some years. I would like to do it again, but although I have also been to the Azores in my Nic 31, in 2001, I am not sure that the handicap would be sufficient to overcome the slower speed. It would, however, be much more comfortable. I shall be going to Dartmouth, will you?
