Andy,
What's an AIS Reciever? What about the AIS Transmitter?

This (http://www.nasamarine.com/AIS/AIS.html) is one of the units that I keep seeing in the sailing magazines.
I have seen screenless units that plug straight into a laptop and then display shipping information overlaid on the chart. One downside is that one needs another whip arial.

I have just ordered one but I don't know what comes with it! What's up the pole? I have seen adverts for AIS engine only - what's that?

As I understand it, the AIS engine-only will identify the targets but it will not display the targets as there is no screen. It therefore needs to be interfaced with a laptop charting system.
I would like to get the AIS engine and we could then interface it with our Apple iBook & GPS Nav X. (http://www.gpsnavx.com/index.php?page=Home)
Where are you goinng to mount the aerial?

I'm not sure where the aerial goes. When I collect all the electronics, I'll be going through it all with the chandler. AIS, Navtex, EPIRB, SSB receiver and VHF, some need MMSI number input. So I will be going through all of it with him, including best places for aerials and switches.
