Replacing Windows

I have managed to remove my saloon window frames which were leaking a little and had planned to send them for refurbishment of rubbers etc. However someone has suggested replacing with perspex or similar, cut to size larger than the opening and simply screwing to the boat and sealing suitably. This dispenses with the need for frames obviously.

Is this a pragmatic solution or sacrilege?

Most of the screws sheared on removal as they were well and truly glued in.

Do I simply redrill the frames offset a little?
