I have the original 2QM20 which is still serving me well but she was never fitted with any engine instrumentation.
Last winter, seeing a small piece in one of the sailing mag's, I ordered a US made Tint-Tach for diesel unit. This cost me only £50 including tax and postage from the UK distributor (Richard Dunn of ITCO email itco@btopenworld.com). Web site www.Tinytach UK
The unit has a small metal sensor which clamps round one of the high pressure fuel lines sensing the flow. This has a lead to earth and the other wire goes to the Tiny-Tach unit which is only about 60mmx40mm.
I have mounted mine next to my engine switch which is sited high up on the port side just inside the companionway entrance. This means it can be read from outside or inside. I have taken the power supply off the back of the engine switch.
The unit worked fine up to about 90 hours but then the hours run ( shows when the engine is switched off) started to play up but the rev counter continued to function fine. This shows all the time the engine is running.
Richard says he has had a few play up but has replaced mine without a quibble and I am sufficiently impressed with the unit and his back up, to give it another go
