View Full Version : rigging for whisker poles and spinnaker

Hi,

When I bought my boat a few years back it came with a set of whisker poles (and a spin pole as well), none of which appear to have ever been used.

I'd like to start using them since I sail in light air relatively often (summer in Long Island Sound). My main questions are how folks have configured their running rigging for whisker poles, and also for spinnaker as well.

1) I believe there's a third sheave on the top of the mast to run a spinnaker halyard so that's pretty obvious, but how have folks run topping lifts? Is there an slot in the mast near the spreader for a sheave? (I'd look but my mast is currently in winter storage).

2) How have folks run the topping lift and downhaul lines on the deck to the cockpit. Specifically I'm trying to figure out where to install some blocks and cam cleats for those lines.

3) Similarly, if new winches are required, where are the best locations? I've seen from photos on the site that some have put them on the deck right above the gangway while others have opted for locations aft of the existing winches in the cockpit.

Ideas and opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Bruce,

Our boat has a block and bracket attached just above the spreaders. I'm only an amateur but it seems to work OK. I've got a rather grainy photo if you require one.

Geoff

Geoff,

Thanks for the reply -- a photo would be great. I have a pretty good idea of the hardware required, I'm mostly interested in how folks are running lines on the mast and deck.
